The Leftovers

The HBO series, The Leftovers, takes place in the aftermath of a rapture-like event where 2% of the world’s population simultaneously vanishes. The show’s creators wanted a compelling opening that would convey the gravity of the story while acknowledging its spiritual dimensions. A visual language of the great Renaissance frescos depicts the moment when the departed are separated from their loved ones. Subtle animations bring these images to life and reinforce their humanity. The piece is mapped onto a dimensional domed ceiling which is revealed in full at the culmination of the sequence.
