T.I.N.Y. @ Pier 57

To kick off the renovation of New York’s Pier 57 and its transformation into a new hub for art and culture, Garson Yu was commissioned to create site-specific public art inside the historic space to encourage participation, imagination and connection. Yu created T.I.N.Y., an interactive, multimedia installation designed to bring people together, incorporating large-scale projection mapping and immersive sound design to transform the pier into a unique New York experience.

The effect created was reminiscent of traveling in a subway train, exploring the acoustic ecology of the city while tapping into the sights and sounds of shared memories. The aural environment recreated a soundscape familiar to New Yorkers - the din of traffic, the hum of street life, the rumble of the subway and the discovery of magical moments. The exhibit is interactive, with participants empowered to affect the projected imagery with the sound of their voice: by making different sounds, the footage could be fast-forwarded and reversed, and even distorted and altered.

T.I.N.Y. (The Interactive New York) encouraged every visitor to participate in the live art installation using their own voice, creativity and imagination.
